History of Prehnite

 

Prehnite is a mineral that was first discovered in 1788 by a Dutch mineralogist named Colonel Hendrik von Prehn, for whom this pretty gemstone was later named for. Prehnite was first discovered by von Prehn in the Karoo region of South Africa. Prehnite is a type of phyllosilicate mineral that is typically pale green in color, but it is also known to be yellow, white, gray, or even colorless.

- Prehnite was the first known occasion of a mineral being named after its discoverer. In 1788 Prehnite was officially designated a new mineral by A.G. Werner, a German geologist. Prehnite was then given its name in recognition of the recently passed Colonel Hendrik von Prehn who was responsible for its discovery.
