Dumortierite is a crystal that was first discovered in 1881 in the Rhône-Alps of France. This stone was named for Eugène Dumortier, a French Paleontologist of the early to mid 1800's.

Dumortierite is often mistaken for Sodalite, Lazulite or even low-grade Lapis Lazuli. Color variations occur in Dumortierite when there is an increased presence of iron and a decreased presence of aluminum in the forming structure of the crystal.
